About Maureen Coates, principal MODECOR
I started my career as a graphic designer, gaining a solid grounding in principals of colour, proportion and the art of refusal: that is, learning what to leave out for the best results. Then, after having been a stay-at-home Mom for more than 19 years, I went back to school to become a certified Interior Decorator. I launched MODECOR in 2009 to provide Interior Decorator and Design Consultant services in the Ottawa area. My personal interest in small space design became an integral part of my business. I experienced downsizing first hand, moving from a large family home to a smaller urban penthouse suite while my business was growing. I love making small spaces sing by affording them the proper attention to design detail and mastering the practical matters of function and flow. No matter the size of your home, I believe your space should be well-edited yet filled with the things you love, regardless of the trends.
I have been published in Style at Home, Ottawa at Home Magazine, Ottawa Magazine, The Ottawa Citizen and have appeared on TV alongside designer colleagues, collectively known as The TBBs, for a segment on seasonal decor. I have been honoured with an award from the Canadian Decorators' Association (CDECA). My passion for working with colour led me to become certified as a True Colour Expert/TCE through colour guru Maria Killam’s excellent colour courses.
